Board of Directors
James Norman, MD, FACS, FACE, is the creator of the Foundation and serves as its Treasurer and Secretary as well as a non-paid member of the Board of Directors. Dr. Norman is recognized worldwide as a leader in the field of parathyroid disease. Dr. Norman has devoted his entire career to the treatment of parathyroid tumors and blood calcium issues and has treated far more patients with hyperparathyroidism than any other physician. Dr. Norman has authored over 200 peer reviewed articles, the vast majority dealing with his expertise in endocrine and parathyroid disorders. Dr. Norman is a fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Endocrinology. Dr. Norman was a principle pioneer and driving force in the field of minimally invasive parathyroid surgery and is credited with dramatically changing the way parathyroid surgery is conducted and to a large degree, the way in which hyperparathyroidism is diagnosed, managed, and cured. Dr. Norman has been awarded over $4.4MM in research grants and has been awarded 6 patents within the field of medicine. Dr. Norman will be responsible for overseeing the Board of Directors and assisting the Organization in obtaining funding and specific grants to further the Organization’s purpose. Michael J. Edwards, MD, FACS, is a non-paid member of the Board of Directors. Dr. Edwards is the Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery, and Surgeon-In-Chief, for the University of Cincinnati. After his surgical residency at the University of Louisville, Dr Edwards completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston. He was ultimately promoted to Professor and Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Louisville. He assumed the position of Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas in 2002 and served until November, 2007 when he moved to Cincinnati. Dr. Edwards has served numerous committees and boards for national surgical societies and is a former president of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. He is highly published and has served on several editorial boards of surgical and oncology journals, including the Annals of Surgical Oncology, the American Journal of Surgery and the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Edwards has been funded numerous times for major research projects including grants from the Veterans Administration, the National Institutes of Health, and the American Cancer Society. Dr. Edwards’s primary duties and responsibilities are to publicly represent the charity, provide governance, and assist committees in fundraising, event management and program implementation. Dr. Edwards will spend approximately 20 hours annually performing his duties.
Katy Heiden, MD is a non-paid member of the Board of Directors. Dr. Heiden is an assistant professor of endocrine and general surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL where her practice focuses on parathyroid and thyroid surgery. She received her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (New York) and completed a residency in general surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Following her residency, Dr. Heiden completed a fellowship in endocrine surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Dr. Heiden has been actively involved in research throughout her career and training. Currently she is involved in research for radiologic studies used in parathyroid localization. While at the Cleveland Clinic, she participated in research aimed to evaluate the role of surgeon-performed ultrasound in parathyroid and thyroid surgery. She serves on the Resident Research Awards Committee of the Rush Surgical Society. She is active in many professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, the American Thyroid Association and the Chicago Endocrine Surgery Club.
