Resident Surgeon in Rotation #2

We spoke with a few more patients and then met a 56 year-old woman from North Carolina.  She had written a list of questions to ask us.  Most of her questions I had heard before.  Finally she said, “I want to know if my hair will grow back when you take out this tumor.”  She had been losing hair, especially in the front of her head, which was the symptom that concerned her most.  I can only imagine how frustrating it is to lose your hair and have no explanation for it.  We were able to give her both a reason and, after the surgery, a cure. Her hair would grow back, we assured her.  I found it incredible that we saw two patients in one day with hair loss and parathyroid tumors.  Maybe there is a pattern here, and not just in the way the surgery is done.
